Julia and Renata Franco’s Fall Collection: Exploring Borders and Boundaries

Julia and Renata Franco have always been known for their conceptual approach to fashion, and their latest fall collection, named “Frontera” (Spanish for border), is no exception. The sisters describe the collection as their most spontaneous yet, focusing on the idea of limits and boundaries.

“Frontera has to do with limits, because the first border you have is all about physics: How you open yourself to the world (or how you protect yourself) is through your body. So we questioned where that border lies—your corporeal border—and how we could embody it,” they said.

The collection kicks off with a striking look: a cocoon gray dress that falls just above the calf. The hem is intentionally wrinkled, symbolizing the fuzzy nature of borders. As your eyes move up the dress, the wrinkles fade away, showcasing the fluidity of boundaries.

Tailoring plays a major role in the collection, with oversized proportions making a statement. Long shirt cuffs peek out from the sleeves of voluminous coats, while boxy jackets are paired with gauzy draped dresses. Experimental looks feature intricate fabric gatherings and drapings, adding depth and dimension to the pieces.

In keeping with their collaborative spirit, the Franco sisters partnered with Loló’s Lorena Zertuche for accessories. 18k gold-dipped tortillas are transformed into pendants and earrings, while shrunken sombreros and huaraches make a bold statement on cuffs and necklaces. The traditional huaraches worn by models are handmade by Baku Artesanal, adding an authentic touch to the collection.

Overall, Julia and Renata Franco’s “Frontera” collection pushes the boundaries of traditional fashion, exploring the concept of borders and how they shape our perceptions of the world. With its mix of tailored silhouettes, experimental drapings, and unique accessories, this collection is a true testament to the sisters’ artistic vision.
