House Republicans Pass President Trump’s Agenda Bill

House Republicans narrowly approved President Trump’s “big, beautiful” agenda bill on Thursday morning, sending it to the Senate after a 48-hour scramble to secure support from fiscal conservatives and blue-state moderates.

The 215-214 vote met House Speaker Mike Johnson’s goal of passing the legislation before the Memorial Day holiday. However, more drama is expected in the Senate, where Republicans are pushing for additional spending cuts and the preservation of current Medicaid rules.

Two Republicans, Warren Davidson of Ohio and Thomas Massie of Kentucky, voted against the measure along with 212 Democrats. Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.), leader of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, abstained from voting.

The bill extends Trump’s 2017 tax cuts and temporarily eliminates taxes on qualified tips, overtime pay, and car loan interest payments. It also introduces a new deduction for seniors instead of removing taxes on Social Security income.

Key Components of the Bill:

  • Increasing the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap
  • Raising the debt ceiling
  • Allocating funds for border security
  • Additional funding for defense
  • Implementing work requirements for Medicaid and SNAP recipients
  • Fast-tracking natural gas exploration permits
  • Ending the electric vehicle mandate
  • Creation of “Trump” savings accounts for children

These key points highlight the main provisions of the bill that House Republicans passed.
