The Justice Department Charges Woman for Assaulting DOJ Official
In a turn of events that one might call emblematic of our political climate, the Justice Department announced on Wednesday that it has formally charged a woman for an incident involving a rather unorthodox form of protest. Emily Gabriella Sommer has been charged under 18 U.S.C. § 111, which addresses the assault, resistance, or impediment of certain officers and employees of the United States.
The incident in question occurred earlier this month while Ed Martin, the then-Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, was engaged in an interview with Newsmax. As he attempted to deliver his thoughts, Sommer, described as a leftist protester, approached him aggressively and spat in his direction, leading to an immediate escalation.
âWe need to stay focused,â Martin remarked during the interview, oblivious to the brewing storm. But as Sommer charged towards him, he instinctively took a step back, only to be met with the projectile of disdain. âWhoa!â was Martin’s shocked response as Sommer yelled, âYouâre a disgusting man!â before walking away, dog in tow, as if she had just delivered a powerful coup de grĂące.
In an unfiltered moment, the encounter was further dramatized when Sommer shouted, âWho the f*ck are you?! You are Ed Martin!â right before her infamous act of defiance.

According to a complaint that was made public the following day, Sommer escalated her verbal attack by declaring, âYou are a disgusting man. Fuck you, Ed Martin. My name is Emily Gabriella SOMMER, and you are served!â This is not a typical courtroom summons, to say the least.
In a stunning twist of candor (or perhaps a lapse in judgment), Sommer took to social media to boast about her actions in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter). âED, that was me that spit in your face today in front of your not USDC for D.C. Courthouse, that absolutely definitely spit in your face on camera,â she shared. âI only apologize that this city left me so dehydrated and unable to get water that I couldnât produce more to stain and drip down your face.â

Sommer continued her tirade, stating that her actions were directed towards what she described as a âdisgusting pig-headed swine-blooded white privileged racist, misogynist, and nepotism hire.â She elaborated with a flair for the dramatic, mentioning Martin’s expensive clothing in a mocking tone: âenjoy that spit on your $6k lapel.â
