In many cultures, a wedding is a significant milestone in a woman’s life, marking her transition from girlhood to womanhood. This is especially true for the people of Mali, where the entire marriage process can last for weeks, encompassing a series of ceremonies, rituals, and celebrations that signify the bride’s journey into a new chapter with her husband. Fanta Diabate, a bride-to-be, explains to Vogue the importance of these traditions, particularly the henna ceremony, which serves as a symbolic prelude to the upcoming nuptials.

“The henna ceremony truly feels like a rite of passage,” Diabate shares. “It’s not just about the intricate designs but also the symbolism, the gathering of women, the sharing of wisdom, and the blessings. All of these elements create a sacred moment before entering into marriage. It’s a deeply emotional experience that honors the bride’s past while preparing her for the future.”

Diabate has chosen Djouma Kebe, an artist selected by her mother, to create her traditional Malian henna design, known as djabi. What sets Malian henna designs apart is their use of geometric patterns, with straight lines arranged in repeating triangle motifs representing fish and their skeletons. “The unity and strength symbolized by the fish bones reflect the desired qualities in a marriage,” Diabate explains. “Fish also symbolize good fortune and abundance, with the increasing size of the triangles signifying growth and prosperity, much like catching a bigger fish with each attempt.”

Rather than providing Kebe with a specific design, Diabate opted to show her inspiration and allowed the artist to incorporate her own creativity. “Each bride’s djabi is unique to her,” she notes, emphasizing the individuality of the designs. The images captured by photographer Denise Stephanie showcase the intricate beauty of these henna designs, highlighting the cultural significance and artistry behind each creation.

In Mali, the wedding journey is not just a celebration of love and union but a reflection of tradition, symbolism, and community. The henna ceremony serves as a poignant moment for brides like Fanta Diabate, bridging the gap between the past and the future as they embark on a new chapter in life. The timeless beauty of Malian henna designs continues to captivate and inspire, showcasing the rich cultural heritage that defines this sacred transition into marriage.
