Constitution Day is celebrated on September 17 every year to honor the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. This historical document, which is 237 years old, plays a crucial role in shaping American democracy. Schools that receive federal funding are required by law to educate students about the Constitution on this day. However, even if it is not mandatory, Constitution Day presents a valuable opportunity to delve into the foundations of the U.S. government with students of all ages.

Elementary, middle, and high school teachers can engage their students in various activities to bring the Constitution to life in the classroom. Starting with the basics, educators can introduce the significance of the Constitution, the events leading to its creation, and its enduring impact on the government and citizens’ rights.

One engaging activity is to have students draft a classroom constitution. By collaborating to create their own set of rules, students not only learn about the Constitution but also participate in a valuable classroom management exercise.

To make learning interactive and hands-on, teachers can organize scavenger hunts, escape rooms, lapbook projects, or craft activities that require students to find information about specific articles, amendments, or facts related to the Constitution. These activities help students retain and master the content in a fun and engaging way.

Another idea is to have students collaborate on creating a Constitution poster that illustrates key aspects such as the three branches of government, checks and balances, or the rights guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. Displaying these posters in the classroom or hallway showcases students’ work and reinforces their understanding of the Constitution.
