When it comes to choosing the right sunscreen for sensitive skin, there are a few key factors to consider. Dr. King recommends mineral sunscreens for those with sensitive skin, as they often include humectants and non-comedogenic emollients that help keep the skin moisturized and prevent pore clogging.

In terms of SPF level, Dr. Greenfield advises that SPF should be 30 or higher for the face, and mineral sunscreens provide broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

When looking at key ingredients in sunscreen, it’s important to find a formula that not only provides protection but also hydrates the skin. Dr. Obioha-Lolagne suggests looking for moisturizing ingredients such as ceramides, squalene, and hyaluronic acid to enhance skin hydration and avoid leaving a chalky white cast on the skin.

If breakouts are a concern, Dr. King notes that sunscreen-related breakouts can be caused by occlusion of pores from comedogenic materials or a sensitivity reaction to chemical UV-blocking ingredients. Look for “non-comedogenic” on the label and opt for sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which are both non-comedogenic.

It’s also important to pay attention to expiration dates and storage conditions of sunscreen. Expired sunscreens or those exposed to direct sunlight and high temperatures may have ineffective ingredients that can potentially irritate the skin.

In terms of texture, Dr. Greenfield advises choosing a sunscreen with a light and breathable texture to avoid clogging pores or causing breakouts. Lotions, creams, and gels are preferred over sprays, which can result in missed areas and uneven coverage.

By considering these factors and choosing the right sunscreen for your sensitive skin, you can protect your skin from harmful UV rays without compromising on hydration or causing breakouts.
