Rock legend Rick Derringer has had a remarkable career in the music industry, starting at a young age when his band The McCoys scored a No.1 hit with the iconic song “Hang On Sloopy” in 1965. This achievement was no small feat, as it even knocked The Beatles’ “Yesterday” out of the top spot.

Derringer’s influence in the music world has been long-lasting, with his work being featured in popular TV shows like “Stranger Things.” His hit song “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” gained even more recognition through its appearance in the series. Additionally, Derringer is credited with discovering the comedic genius “Weird Al” Yankovic and producing Yankovic’s first albums, for which he won a Grammy.

In the 1980s, Derringer’s collaboration with Cyndi Lauper led to the production of the cult classic “The Wrestling Album” in 1985. This project showcased Derringer’s versatility and creativity, as he worked alongside David Wolff to create a unique musical experience for wrestling fans. The success of this album led to the release of its sequel, “Piledriver: The Wrestling Album II,” in 1987.

One of Derringer’s most iconic contributions to music is the song “I am a Real American,” which became synonymous with wrestling legend Hulk Hogan and his loyal fan base, known as the Hulkamaniacs. Despite the song’s popularity, Derringer always felt that it had the potential to be more than just a wrestler’s theme song. He envisioned it as a patriotic anthem for all Americans, aiming for a higher level of recognition and appreciation.

Reflecting on his career and the impact of “I am a Real American,” Derringer shared his aspirations for the song, stating, “We had wanted to write this fabulous patriotic song for all Americans. We saw it somehow on a different level than a wrestler’s theme song, so in some ways I was a little let down.” Despite his feelings of longing for greater recognition, Derringer’s musical legacy continues to resonate with fans around the world.
