In August of last year, I made the decision to leave my familiar college town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and embark on a new journey in New York City for graduate school.

Upon arriving in New York, I was still in the process of healing from a long-term relationship that had ended not too long ago. I intended to take things slow in the dating scene, hoping to just go on a few casual dates. Little did I know that I would meet someone special and fall in love – my boyfriend, a Fulbright scholar on a student visa.

Our relationship blossomed from chance encounters at social events to romantic dinners and walks across iconic New York landmarks. The moment he officially asked me to be his girlfriend in Times Square remains etched in my memory.

As we navigate our relationship while pursuing our graduate studies, the uncertainty of his visa status and the political climate adds a layer of complexity. The recent challenges faced by Fulbright students like delayed stipends and travel bans have cast a shadow of doubt over our future together.

Despite the obstacles, we cherish the time we have in New York, exploring the city’s cultural offerings and creating lasting memories. However, the looming threat of visa restrictions and travel uncertainties looms over us.

The ongoing political climate and immigration crackdowns have instilled fear and uncertainty in our lives. The constant threat of separation and the impact of policy changes weigh heavily on our minds.
