Exploring Darkness and Catharsis Through Fashion

In contrast to traditional fashion norms, designer Vivian Lin, known as Bibi, has embraced darkness and horror as a means of path to catharsis. She aims to humanize the unknown and invites the audience to consider destruction as a form of creation. Lin’s voluminous designs resemble exoskeletons adorned with organic shapes of internal organs, crafted with materials like felted wool, latex, wax, kelp, and mold.

Tracy Zhang’s dystopian collection draws inspiration from the movie Bladerunner and her lived experience during Beijing’s 2013 “Airpocalypse.” Reflecting on her childhood curiosity during the event, Zhang’s collection revisits a sense of adventure while exploring the brutal reality of a post-apocalyptic landscape. Using reclaimed materials such as foam and faux-fur, she creates garments that are both survivalist and dreamy.

Olivia Rose Fournier’s work is inspired by the ocean, evident in the undulations and palette of her designs. One dress, with side tucks resembling water marks or scallop shell ridges, stands out. Fournier’s work aims to provide reassurance, likening life to the ocean full of changes but with hope for a positive outcome.

Anna Winters’s delicate work is rooted in familiar materials and familial relations. Her textiles are created by hanging vintage pieces in the window to cast patterns onto garments. Through handwork, Winters captures subtle tones and textures, focusing on acts of memorialization. Her designs exude serenity, with a memorable pair of pants stealing the spotlight.

Designer Jordan Wang delves into feelings of identity crisis and cultural anxiety, drawing inspiration from contemporary Chinese art. Transforming pain into beauty, Wang uses everyday objects like plastic totes to create romantic and dramatic dresses. Her designs also feature nude mesh dresses embellished with mosaic bath tiles and styles made of wigs adorned with shiny barrettes.
