The tragic incident involving the death of high school homecoming king, Blake Unger, has left the community in shock. The young man lost his life in a drunk driving accident just days after graduating from New York Mills High School. His classmate and driver, Izak Schermerhorn, now faces charges of vehicular homicide for his role in the fatal crash.

According to reports, Schermerhorn, who had previously battled with alcoholism, had consumed three or four alcoholic beverages before taking Unger for a late-night drive. The driver admitted to deputies that he had been sober for a year but decided to drink to celebrate their graduation. He also mentioned that he wanted to show off the modifications he had made to his truck, including the exhaust system.

The tragic accident occurred when Schermerhorn lost control of the vehicle while intentionally sliding around the road. Unger was found trapped under the pickup truck, and despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries. Schermerhorn expressed deep regret to authorities, acknowledging that his actions had led to the loss of his friend’s life.

Schermerhorn appeared in court where he was granted release on bail under strict conditions, including seeking counseling, abstaining from drug and alcohol use, and staying out of trouble. The community mourns the loss of Unger, a popular three-sport athlete who was named homecoming king just last fall.

District Superintendent Adam Johnson expressed profound sadness at the tragic news, emphasizing the devastating impact on the entire school community. The loss of a vibrant young life serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of drunk driving and the importance of responsible decision-making behind the wheel.

As the community grapples with this heartbreaking loss, it is essential to reflect on the consequences of reckless actions and the need for vigilance when it comes to road safety. Unger’s memory will live on as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones.
