An upstate New York woman has been charged with felony animal cruelty after a helpless dog was found abandoned in an apartment, leaving it severely emaciated and on the brink of death. The pit bull mix, named Rhett, was discovered in an apartment in Kirkland, just outside Utica, on May 16, in a heartbreaking condition.

Rhett was in a state of extreme emaciation and dehydration when he was found, unable to stand due to his weakened state. Photos of the poor dog showed his ribs and spine protruding through his thin, flea-infested fur. Kindred Spirits Greyhound Adoption, the rescue organization aiding in his recovery, described Rhett’s condition as shocking and stated that he was likely only days away from death.

Lindsay Meelan, 36, of Clark Mills, was arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony offense, as well as misdemeanor animal cruelty. She has been released and is scheduled to appear in Kirkland court on June 17 for her charges.

Following his rescue, Rhett received an emergency blood transfusion and treatment for starvation, anemia, and fleas. It took about a week for him to regain enough strength to stand on his own. The rescue group has raised nearly $6,000 to cover the costs of his treatment and care, emphasizing that Rhett’s sweet personality has won over everyone involved in his recovery.

While Rhett is not completely out of the woods yet, he has been moved to a foster home where he is receiving the love and care he needs to continue improving. The group remains hopeful for his recovery and is dedicated to ensuring that he receives the best possible care.
