The Fallout of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency on USIP Headquarters

The recent revelation from George Moose, the chief executive of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), paints a grim picture of the aftermath of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) takeover of the nonprofit’s Washington, D.C., headquarters. According to a sworn statement reported by Court Watch, Moose described the headquarters as being left in disarray, plagued by water damage, rats, and roaches.

This development comes on the heels of a federal judge’s ruling that deemed DOGE’s takeover of USIP as illegal. Despite Musk’s claim to step away from DOGE, he will reportedly continue to advise the administration alongside President Trump.

The standoff between DOGE and USIP began in mid-March, culminating in DOGE staff allegedly breaking into the USIP headquarters. Moose expressed concerns about the administration’s intentions to dismantle foreign assistance programs, citing similarities to the dismantling of the United States Agency for International Development.

Initially downplaying the condition of the headquarters, Moose later discovered a different reality when his staff documented issues like vermin infestation, water leaks, and neglected maintenance. He noted that the building had been abandoned for weeks before USIP regained control, leading to the deterioration of its condition.

To address the situation, USIP has enlisted a private security firm to safeguard the premises and has taken over maintenance responsibilities to restore the headquarters to its former state.
