In HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” sound designer Paula Fairfield is the mastermind behind the vocal personalities of the fire-breathing dragons. She starts by giving each dragon a unique story to bring them to life.

Each dragon, whether it’s the “old lady” Vhagar, the “white boy who thinks he can rap” Caraxes, or the “fidgety” 13-year-old Taylor Swift fan Syrax, has its own distinct personality that Fairfield meticulously crafts. This attention to detail was crucial in Season 2, as more dragons took to the skies in the Targaryen dynasty’s war.

Fairfield’s process involves blending animal sounds from thousands of recordings to create the vocal makeup of each dragon. She believes that using animal sounds captures pure emotion without any pretense. For example, Vhagar’s tired and cranky demeanor is reflected in infant sounds.

Pitch shifting and manipulation of sounds are essential techniques Fairfield uses to create the dragons’ voices. This was especially important in Season 2 when Meleys, ridden by Rhaenys, met a tragic end in battle.

One of Fairfield’s biggest challenges is ensuring that the dragons’ voices stand out amidst the soaring score by composer Ramin Djawadi. She carefully crafts each dragon’s vocal range to complement the music.

In key scenes like Queen Rhaenyra’s encounter with the dragon Vermithor, Fairfield’s work shines. The dragons’ personalities are brought to life through subtle vocal cues, like Vermithor’s tender hum when choosing his rider.

Fairfield’s attention to detail is evident in every dragon’s vocalization, whether it’s a chirp or a roar. Her work adds depth and emotion to the dragons’ characters, making them a vital part of the storytelling in “House of the Dragon.”

Overall, Fairfield’s expertise in creating the vocal personalities of the dragons elevates the show’s immersive experience, adding a layer of complexity and emotion to these mythical creatures. Her dedication to capturing the essence of each dragon through sound is truly remarkable and enhances the storytelling in “House of the Dragon.”
