Judge Sentences Otavion Miller to 8 Years in Prison for Carjacking Lyft Driver
A judge has handed down an 8-year prison sentence for Otavion Miller, a 19-year-old man who pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular hijacking with a weapon. This incident occurred while Miller was awaiting trial for seven juvenile court cases, according to court records.
The carjacking took place on May 16, 2024, in the 5200 block of South Green. The victim, a 45-year-old Lyft driver from Palatine, was ordered out of his car at gunpoint by Miller. Chicago police officers were able to quickly locate a vehicle matching the description given by the victim, leading to Miller’s arrest.
During the arrest, a police helicopter unit observed Miller leaving the vehicle in an alley and fleeing on foot. An unloaded pistol with an illegal aftermarket switch capable of automatic firing, a black ski mask, the victim’s credit card, and wallet were recovered by officers in the vicinity where Miller was apprehended. The Lyft driver positively identified Miller as the perpetrator of the carjacking.
Despite the seriousness of the carjacking incident, details regarding the outcomes of the seven juvenile cases pending against Miller at the time are not publicly available due to juvenile records being sealed from public view.
Miller is scheduled to be eligible for parole in April 2028, having served approximately half of his 8-year sentence. State law allows for a 50% reduction in sentence for good behavior, including in cases of vehicular hijacking. Additionally, Miller earned 385 days of credit while in custody at the county jail.
