Prosecutors have recently filed hate crime charges against a Hoffman Estates man, Adam Erkan, for his involvement in an attack on DePaul University students who were showing support for Israel. The incident, which took place last year, left two students injured. Max Long claims to have suffered a concussion, while Michael Kaminsky suffered a broken wrist during the altercation.

Surveillance footage captured Erkan arriving on DePaul’s Lincoln Park campus in a vehicle approximately an hour before the attack on November 6. He was seen putting on a ski mask and approaching a student who was wearing a pro-Israel shirt and holding a sign inviting discussions about Israel with an Israel Defense Forces soldier outside the student center on North Sheffield.

During a conversation with the student, one of Erkan’s companions allegedly knocked Long unconscious. When another DePaul student intervened, Erkan reportedly pulled him off and pushed him to the ground. Chicago police investigators were able to identify Erkan through surveillance images and his father, who owned the car Erkan arrived in, confirmed his identity to authorities.

Prosecutors have pressed two counts of hate crime and two counts of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm against Erkan. Judge James Costello has ordered Erkan to be detained until his trial, despite his lack of prior criminal history.

The incident at DePaul University has sparked outrage and raised concerns about safety on campus. Students should be able to express their opinions and beliefs without fear of violence or intimidation. The university and law enforcement officials must work together to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.

As the case against Erkan progresses, it serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting differing viewpoints and engaging in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to violence. Hate crimes have no place in our society, and those responsible must be held accountable for their actions.
