John Brenkus — the founder and host of ESPN’s Emmy-winning “Sport Science” show — has died at 54 years old.

Brenkus’ loved ones said in a statement Sunday evening he passed away on Saturday following a battle with depression.

“His heartbroken family and friends request privacy at this time,” the statement read, “and encourage anyone who is struggling with depression to seek help.”

John Brenkus, known for creating and hosting the groundbreaking show “Sport Science,” passed away at the age of 54. Graduating from the Univ. of Virginia, Brenkus revolutionized sports analysis with his attention to detail and dedication to showcasing the science behind athletic performance.

His show, initially airing on Fox Sports Network, gained widespread acclaim upon moving to ESPN, solidifying his status as a pioneer in sports science analysis.

Colleagues like Adam Schefter expressed their deep sadness over Brenkus’ passing, highlighting his immense talent and impact on the sports industry.
