In the world of television scoring, the approach can vary greatly from show to show. Some series call for a massive 60-piece orchestra to bring the music to life, while others rely on the talents of a single musician. This contrast is beautifully illustrated by two popular shows of this season: Apple TV+’s satirical series “The Studio” and Disney+’s acclaimed drama “Andor.”

For “The Studio,” percussionist Antonio Sanchez takes center stage with his innovative all-drums score. Showrunners Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg discovered Sanchez’s work from the film “Birdman” and knew his rhythmic style would be a perfect fit for their Hollywood satire. Sanchez’s background as a jazz drummer brings a unique intensity and lightness to the score, with multiple drum tracks layered to create a dynamic sound. In addition to drums, Sanchez adds bass, piano, and sampled brass or woodwinds to enhance the storyline, all crafted in his studio near Barcelona.

On the other hand, “Andor” requires a grander approach, with composer Brandon Roberts leading a 60-piece London orchestra for the new season. Stepping in after Emmy-nominated Nicholas Britell, Roberts maintains the musical DNA of the show while introducing new themes for the planets Yavin, Mina-Rau, and Ghorman. Each planet’s theme reflects its unique characteristics, from the grand orchestral sound of Yavin to the earthy Americana vibe of Mina-Rau and the Viennese waltzes of Ghorman.

Roberts’ work on “Andor” extends beyond traditional scoring, incorporating background source music like the Ghorman band “Kafhaus” and tribal drums for a wedding scene. He even composes an operatic aria in the Ghorman language, adding depth and authenticity to the show’s universe. Despite the challenge of fitting into the “Star Wars” musical continuity, Roberts finds joy in contributing his own voice to the iconic franchise.

In conclusion, whether it’s a one-man percussion show or a symphonic masterpiece, the music of “The Studio” and “Andor” plays a crucial role in shaping the narrative and emotional impact of these series. Both Sanchez and Roberts bring their unique talents to the table, creating unforgettable soundscapes that enhance the viewing experience for audiences around the world.
