Man Arrested for Bank Robbery After Using Taxi as Getaway Vehicle

A man is facing federal charges for a bank robbery in Lakeview after he allegedly used a taxi to travel to and from the crime scene, even using part of the stolen money to pay for the cab fare. The suspect reportedly confessed to authorities that he spent the remaining money on drugs.

The incident occurred on May 29, around 11 a.m., when a man arrived at Fifth Third Bank on North Broadway in a white taxi. He entered the bank, threatened the teller by claiming he had a gun, and demanded money, walking away with approximately $420 before returning to the waiting cab.

Fortunately, the entire robbery was captured on video, allowing law enforcement to quickly identify the suspect. Investigators tracked down the taxi company, interviewed the driver, and traced the suspect to a motel on 76th Street and Cottage Grove.

Upon reviewing surveillance footage from the motel, officers located the suspect, Theodore Nelson, who bore a striking resemblance to the bank robber in terms of appearance and attire. Nelson was promptly arrested in Room 108.

During questioning, Nelson admitted to robbing the bank but claimed he apologized to the teller, explaining that he was homeless and in need of money. He confessed to obtaining around $420 from the robbery, which he used to pay for the taxi ride, purchase drugs, and rent a motel room for a drug dealer.
