The Trump administration is targeting California after a 16-year-old transgender athlete, AB Hernandez, won multiple events at a state track and field championship. Despite facing protests, Hernandez emerged victorious in the girls’ high jump and triple jump, with other students also receiving medals in the same categories. President Trump took to Truth Social to express his disapproval, while the Department of Justice sent a letter claiming California’s laws allowing transgender students to compete are unconstitutional.

The letter from the Department of Justice gives California a week to comply with their interpretation of the Equal Protection Clause. In response, California’s superintendent of public instruction stated that the DOJ assertions are not enforceable law. The California Interscholastic Federation expanded eligibility for the championships, emphasizing inclusivity and compliance with state laws.

AB Hernandez’s mother, Nereyda Hernandez, expressed pride in her daughter’s achievements despite the distractions caused by protests during the event. She shared how her perspective changed after speaking with AB and witnessing her maturity in handling the situation. The article highlights the ongoing debate surrounding transgender athletes and the push for fair and inclusive competition.
