Photographer Hardik Shelat recently embarked on an expedition in Gujarat, India, where he witnessed a rare phenomenon along a river in scorching heat. Despite temperatures soaring above 110 degrees Fahrenheit, Shelat and his team were not the only ones trying to stay hydrated and cool in the oppressive weather.

The group patiently waited for nearly two-and-a-half hours in the intense heat, hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive fruit bats. Finally, their patience paid off as the nocturnal creatures emerged from the trees to cool off and quench their thirst by the river.

The Indian flying fox, also known as the giant fruit bat, stands out for its long, canid-like snout and impressive size, boasting a wingspan of almost four feet. These bats typically gather in trees, living in large colonies, and sustain themselves on a diet of fruits, nectar, seeds, and insects. Unlike many other bat species, they rely on their keen sight and sense of smell to locate food, rather than using echolocation.

Shelat’s stunning wildlife photography captures the beauty and grace of these creatures as they gracefully skim the surface of the water while cooling off in the river. His work has been recognized and featured by esteemed organizations such as the BBC, National Geographic, WWF, and Discovery.

To see more of Shelat’s incredible wildlife images and adventures, be sure to follow him on Instagram.

As we marvel at the breathtaking images captured by Shelat, it serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting wildlife habitats and species around the world. Each stunning photograph tells a story and highlights the beauty and wonder of the natural world, encouraging us to appreciate and cherish the diverse life forms that share our planet.
