Steve Collins Steps Down as CTO of Unity

After just six months in the role, Steve Collins, the Chief Technology Officer of game engine developer Unity, has announced his decision to step down. Unity confirmed this news to JS, stating that Collins joined the company after serving as CTO of King, the popular mobile gaming company known for Candy Crush.

Unity expressed gratitude for Collins’ contributions but mentioned that his departure was a personal decision. A company representative stated, “We can confirm that Steve Collins has decided to leave Unity for personal reasons. We’re grateful for his contributions. As we continue our transformation, we’re confident our world-class tech team will keep driving the strategy forward.”

Unity has been through internal turmoil in recent years, including controversial pricing changes in fall 2023 that led to backlash from the developer community. This resulted in the resignation of CEO John Riccitiello. Subsequently, Unity had to lay off 25% of its staff, totaling 1,800 jobs.

Despite distancing itself from these events, some game developers still harbor skepticism towards Unity. Collins’ departure, although not directly linked to the company’s struggles, could potentially cause further disruption.
