The Apollo Theater’s Spring 2025 Benefit was a night to remember, filled with sunshine, star power, and celebration. The evening kicked off with the induction of music legend Clive Davis into the theater’s Walk of Fame, a milestone moment that set the tone for the rest of the event. With icons like Babyface, Busta Rhymes, Monica, and Deborah Cox in attendance, the atmosphere was electric as guests gathered to mark the institution’s 91st anniversary and its upcoming renovation.

The evening began with a cocktail hour, followed by a performance from Apollo New Works artist Martha Redbone, who paid tribute to the late Bell Hooks with an excerpt from her multidisciplinary piece, Guardian Spirit. Comedian Kym Whitley, the host of the evening, delivered spirited tributes to both honorees, joking about Clive Davis’s Grammy parties and marveling at Teyana Taylor’s many talents.

Apollo President and CEO Michelle Ebanks announced that the night had raised an impressive $3.2 million, with an additional $2.5 million gift from Bloomberg Philanthropies. She emphasized the theater’s cultural significance as the “World Famous Apollo Theater,” a title that reflects its enduring legacy in championing Black music.

When Harlem-native Teyana Taylor accepted her award, she honored the theater’s traditions by rubbing the iconic “Tree of Hope” stump, expressing gratitude for the Apollo’s role as a village in her life. Clive Davis highlighted the theater’s impact on American popular culture, praising its dedication to showcasing the truth of Black music.

Musical performances throughout the evening featured artists like Shoshana Bean, Deborah Cox, Method Man, and Busta Rhymes, with a touching tribute to Apollo benefactor Richard Parsons led by Rev. Al Sharpton.

The night reached its peak during the after-party, where guests were led down 126th Street by the Marching Cobras to a block-party-style celebration. Signature cocktails, passed bites, and a packed dance floor kept the energy high as D-Nice spun the soundtrack. Black Sheep’s Dres surprised guests with a live performance, while Dapper Dan and Busta Rhymes mingled with attendees, creating a moment that only Harlem could deliver.

Overall, the Apollo’s Spring 2025 Benefit was a night of glamour, music, and community, showcasing the theater’s enduring legacy and cultural significance. As the venue prepares for a historic renovation, the event served as a fitting tribute to its past, present, and future.
