Nick Frost, known for his roles in “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz,” has recently been cast as the new Hagrid in HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” series. However, Frost has made it clear that he does not share author J.K. Rowling’s views on trans rights, which have sparked controversy in recent years.

In an interview with The Observer, Frost discussed the backlash he received from trans rights activists after his casting was announced. He mentioned that he had to disable comments on his Instagram post due to the negative response. Despite this, Frost emphasized that he and Rowling have differing opinions on the matter, stating, “She’s allowed her opinion and I’m allowed mine, they just don’t align in any way, shape or form.”

When asked if he is concerned that the debate over Rowling’s views may overshadow the new series, Frost expressed uncertainty. He suggested that instead of hoping the issue will fade away, it may be more beneficial to educate ourselves and engage in meaningful discussions.

On the other hand, Tom Felton, who portrayed Draco Malfoy in the original “Harry Potter” films and is set to reprise his role on Broadway in “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” shared a different perspective. Felton stated that despite the controversy surrounding Rowling, he remains grateful for the impact the franchise has had in bringing people together around the world.

While representatives for Rowling declined to comment on the matter, Felton’s remarks highlight the enduring popularity and cultural significance of the “Harry Potter” series. As the new series featuring Frost as Hagrid moves forward, it will be interesting to see how the ongoing discussion surrounding Rowling’s views on trans rights may influence the reception of the show.

Overall, the diverse viewpoints expressed by Frost and Felton demonstrate the complexity of navigating sensitive issues within the context of beloved franchises like “Harry Potter.” As fans eagerly anticipate the new series, it remains to be seen how these differing perspectives will shape the ongoing conversation surrounding the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling.
