President Trump shared on Monday that Iran is insisting on the right to continue enriching uranium in any new nuclear deal — a demand that the US cannot accept.
During a press conference at the White House, Trump, 78, stated, “They are asking for things that are non-negotiable. They are unwilling to give up their enrichment capabilities, which goes against our objectives. We are looking for the opposite. At this point, they are not willing to meet us halfway.”
The president mentioned that US officials are scheduled to meet with Iranian counterparts later in the week, but the possibility of reaching an agreement seems distant.
Trump expressed his optimism about the possibility of Washington and Tehran reaching a new agreement to replace the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA), from which the US withdrew in 2018.
“Iran’s leaders are skilled negotiators, but they are firm in their stance,” Trump remarked. “Their negotiation style can be challenging, which is the current hurdle we are facing. We are working towards a peaceful resolution to avoid any conflicts. I have conveyed this message to Ayatollah Khamenei, and we hope for a positive outcome, although it is uncertain at this point.”
