Last month, signs were evident that the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) would face significant challenges, as only four Democratic members of the Senate Armed Services Committee opposed it. The bill was set to fail due to Republican proposals, which included $1.15 trillion in funding for the Department of Defense and efforts to strengthen military and intelligence ties with Israel.
These proposals were deemed unacceptable by Senate Democrats.

The bill was defeated with a 50-46 vote. All present Democrats voted against it. Meanwhile, Republicans Jim Justice of West Virginia and Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, along with Democrats John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Alex Padilla of California, were absent.
Reuters reported:
Democrats are concerned that an extensive Pentagon budget would be perceived as an endorsement of the war on Iran, which began with U.S. and Israeli strikes on February 28. They also oppose the Trump administration’s initiative to increase military spending to a total of $1.5 trillion this year, which includes several hundred million dollars requested in a separate spending bill, while reducing social programs for Americans.
The Senate’s procedural vote against the NDAA signifies a significant shift in support for Israel and defense funding.
