Michigan State University has reached a significant settlement with three students who survived a tragic shooting on campus in 2023. The university has agreed to pay a total of nearly $30 million to the survivors, who suffered life-altering injuries during the attack that claimed the lives of three other students.

Nathan Statly, who was shot in the head during the incident, will receive $14.2 million in the settlement. Yukai (John) Hao, who was left paralyzed after being shot in the back, will receive $13 million. Troy Forbush, who was shot in the chest, will receive $2.5 million. These settlements come after negotiations between the university and the survivors’ legal representatives.

The shooting took place on February 13, 2023, when the gunman, later identified as Anthony McRae, opened fire at Berkey Hall and the Michigan State student union, killing three students and injuring several others. The university buildings were unlocked and open to the public at the time of the attack.

After a three-hour manhunt, the gunman was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. In December 2023, the university reached a $15 million settlement with the families of the students who were killed in the shooting.

The survivors, who suffered extensive injuries, are now facing a long road to recovery. Nathan Statly, a junior studying environmental biology and zoology, has a traumatic brain injury. Troy Forbush, a junior pursuing a double major in music education and vocal performance, lost his opportunity for an opera career. John Hao, a junior studying economics, is now a paraplegic.

The settlements will provide much-needed relief and support to the survivors and their families. The legal representatives of the survivors praised the university for ultimately taking responsibility and reaching a resolution without going to court. The process took over two years to complete.

This settlement marks a turning point for the survivors, allowing them to move forward with their lives after facing uncertainty and unresolved disputes for so long. The university’s decision to settle demonstrates a commitment to addressing the needs of those affected by the tragic events of that fateful day.

Overall, the settlements will provide a sense of closure and justice for the survivors as they continue to heal and rebuild their lives. The legal teams involved in the negotiations are commended for their dedication to achieving a fair outcome for all parties involved.
