The protocol begins with three independent randomness sources, each generating its own set of random numbers. These sources then combine their outputs through an XOR operation, creating a single stream of random bits. The resulting bit stream is then processed through a series of cryptographic hash functions, creating a hash chain.

To ensure the integrity of the random numbers, the researchers implemented a verification process that involves comparing the hash chains generated by each source. If any discrepancies are found, the system flags them as suspicious and alerts the appropriate authorities.

In addition to hash chains, the protocol also incorporates a secure multiparty computation technique that allows the sources to compute the XOR operation without revealing their individual inputs. This ensures that each source remains private and secure throughout the random number generation process.

By distributing trust across multiple entities and implementing robust cryptographic techniques, the researchers have created a cheat-proof protocol for generating random numbers. This protocol not only ensures the unpredictability of the random numbers but also guards against potential manipulation or tampering.

At each station, the incoming photon’s polarization is randomly measured, resulting in a bit: either a 0 or a 1.

This meticulous process is designed to ensure true randomness, as Kavuri explains, “You would need to communicate faster than the speed of light to be able to spoof this.” This process is repeated millions of times, creating a massive stream of raw random bits. Quality control tests are conducted, and the random number sample is combined with data from a third institution to further enhance randomness. An algorithm filters out any patterns, resulting in 512 bits of certified pure randomness.

The sheer number of possibilities generated by these 512 bits is mind-boggling, surpassing the atoms in the observable universe. Over a 40-day trial, the protocol proved to be extremely secure, with a minuscule chance of any errors occurring. This level of security is essential in ensuring the integrity and reliability of the random numbers generated.

To further enhance trust and security, more institutions can join the network, distributing tasks and responsibilities. Some institutions may actively participate in generating random numbers, while others serve as impartial observers, recording and verifying events in the hash chain. The random numbers are eventually made public on beacons like NIST’s, ensuring transparency and accountability.
