17 arrested during immigration protest in the Loop

On Tuesday, a protest against the Trump administration’s immigration policies in downtown Chicago turned chaotic, resulting in the arrest of 17 individuals by the Chicago Police Department. The demonstration took a dangerous turn when a 66-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle as a motorist drove through part of the crowd around 6:30 p.m. Fortunately, the victim was treated and released from Northwestern Memorial Hospital, but the driver responsible for the incident remains at large.

Among the 17 people arrested, 10 are facing misdemeanor charges, four face felony charges, one was cited for possession of paint or a marker with intent to deface, and two individuals are still in custody with charges pending. The CPD released a list of those arrested and their corresponding charges, which include various offenses such as aggravated battery of a peace officer, criminal damage, battery, resisting or aiding escape, reckless conduct, and criminal defacement.

The individuals arrested during the protest are as follows:

– Nathan Sol, 20, facing two felony counts of aggravated battery of a peace officer
– Yony Salgado, 33, charged with one felony count of aggravated battery of a peace officer
– Johnathan Ellison, 37, facing one felony count of aggravated battery of a peace officer
– Asnat Berestizhevsky, 27, charged with felony criminal damage, misdemeanor battery, and a citation for resisting or aiding escape
– Jordan Schnitz, 23, charged with misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor resisting police
– Oscar Garcia Jr., 24, facing misdemeanor reckless conduct and misdemeanor resisting or obstructing
– Ali Khaledodeh, 26, charged with misdemeanor criminal defacement
– Charles Brooks, 20, facing misdemeanor criminal defacement and a citation for possession of paint or a marker with intent to deface
– Jacqueline Rincon, 21, charged with misdemeanor resisting or obstructing
– Jose Stewart, 23, facing misdemeanor reckless conduct
– Anusha Singh, 25, charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct
– Lucas Shutt, 20, facing misdemeanor reckless conduct
– Joel Perez, 22, charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct causing bodily harm
– Brenda Rosales, 33, facing misdemeanor reckless conduct causing bodily harm

The incident during the protest highlights the tensions and risks associated with public demonstrations, as well as the challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining order and ensuring public safety. The Chicago Police Department’s swift response to the situation underscores the importance of community policing and effective communication between authorities and protesters to prevent such incidents in the future.
