Karen Read’s Defense Presents Expert Witness to Dispute Prosecution’s Claims
During Karen Read’s trial, her defense brought in Dr. Andrew Rentschler to challenge the prosecution’s allegations regarding the death of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, a Boston cop. Rentschler testified that O’Keefe’s injuries were not consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
The jurors will begin deliberations after receiving instructions from the judge and hearing closing arguments on Friday. Read is accused of hitting O’Keefe with her SUV and leaving him with a skull fracture during a blizzard.
Rentschler, a crash reconstruction expert, spent two days on the stand explaining why he believes O’Keefe’s injuries do not align with being hit by an SUV. However, the prosecution challenged his testing methods during cross-examination.
Legal analysts speculate that the case could come down to a battle of the experts, with Rentschler’s testimony being a pivotal moment for the defense. The lack of arm injuries and other inconsistencies in O’Keefe’s injuries were highlighted by Rentschler.
Despite the prosecution’s decision not to call a rebuttal witness, the closing arguments are expected to be crucial for both parties. Rentschler’s testimony was deemed strong and methodical in debunking the prosecution’s theory.
Retired judge and law professor, Jack Lu, noted that both Rentschler and the prosecution’s expert are part of a profit-driven industry, and their testing methods may seem questionable at times. The jury will reconvene after a charging conference for final instructions and closing arguments.
