The 2024 Emmys night was a memorable one, especially for FX’s hit series, “The Bear,” which made history by winning 11 trophies for its second season. This achievement surpassed the previous record set by the show’s first season, which had won 10 awards. However, not everyone was pleased with the show’s dominance in the comedy category.

Laraine Newman, an original cast member of “Saturday Night Live” and the mother of “Hacks” star Hannah Einbinder, took to social media to express her discontent with “The Bear” being classified as a comedy. Newman criticized the show for what she perceived as category fraud, stating that she could feel an ulcer developing every time she thought about it.

Despite the backlash, “The Bear” continued to rack up wins at the Emmys, with its cast members Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach taking home acting awards. However, the show faced stiff competition from “Hacks,” which ended up winning the coveted Outstanding Comedy Series award in a surprising upset.

The debate over whether “The Bear” should be considered a comedy or drama intensified as the show’s second season received critical acclaim for its dramatic episodes. Even Emmy hosts Dan and Eugene Levy couldn’t resist poking fun at the ongoing discussion during their monologue, acknowledging the show’s record-breaking 23 nominations.

In the end, the success of “The Bear” at the Emmys highlighted the blurred lines between comedy and drama in today’s television landscape. While the show may have divided opinions, there’s no denying its impact on the industry and its ability to captivate audiences with its unique storytelling.
