Chicago Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Carjacking Incident
A Chicago man, Darrius Berry, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by Judge Thomas Hennelly after pleading guilty to one count of vehicular hijacking. The incident took place on January 2, 2024, in the 9400 block of South Laflin Street.
According to court records, the victim, a 39-year-old man, was sitting in his 2021 Mazda CX-9 when Berry approached him, pointed a gun at his head, and demanded the keys to the car. The victim complied, handed over the keys, and went inside his house.
However, the victim quickly armed himself and returned to confront Berry, who was seated in the Mazda with a firearm on the passenger seat. The victim held Berry at gunpoint until the police arrived on the scene.
During the confrontation, the victim questioned Berry about any possible accomplices, to which Berry claimed there was someone around the corner. However, no accomplices were found by the victim or the authorities.
Police recovered the firearm left by Berry on the passenger seat of the Mazda, which was reported stolen from a vehicle in a separate incident a month prior.
With the standard 50% sentence reduction and credits earned while in jail, Berry is expected to be eligible for release in just over three years.
