ESA/Proba-3’s artificial solar eclipse has provided scientists with a groundbreaking opportunity to study the sun’s corona in extreme detail. The mission, which involves two satellites – the Occulter and the Coronagraph, captured stunning images of the sun’s outermost atmosphere during a carefully coordinated dance in space.

In March, the two satellites autonomously lined up for several hours to take multiple exposures of the eclipsed sun. These images were then stitched together to produce full photos of the sun’s corona, revealing temperatures that are millions of degrees hotter than the sun’s surface.

The Proba-3 mission aims to improve our understanding of the sun’s corona physics and help us better understand phenomena like the solar wind and coronal mass ejections, which can impact space weather. The images captured by the satellites show the sun’s corona in visible light, as well as specific frequencies of light that correspond to elements in the corona, such as electron-depleted iron in the hottest regions.

Additionally, the satellites have captured the sun’s corona in polarized white light, artificially colored to appear violet. This special technique allows scientists to separate the polarized light of the hot corona from light scattered by interplanetary dust.

The success of Proba-3’s artificial solar eclipse images marks a major achievement in space exploration and will pave the way for more detailed studies of the sun’s corona in the future. With the ability to capture artificial eclipses every 19.6 hours, the mission promises to provide valuable insights into the workings of our nearest star and its impact on space weather.
