WhatsApp, the popular messaging app, has recently announced that it will be introducing ads to the platform. The company revealed in a Meta blog post that these ads will be featured in the app’s Updates tab, which is used by 1.5 billion people daily worldwide to keep track of status updates and new content from channels they follow.
The ads will specifically appear in the Channel Status section of the Updates tab, ensuring that they do not intrude on personal chats. Meta has reassured users that their messages will remain end-to-end encrypted, meaning that personal conversations will not be used for personalized ads. Additionally, Meta has promised not to sell users’ phone numbers to advertisers.
The new ad system will use limited information such as the user’s location, language, followed channels, and interaction with ads to deliver targeted ads. If users have linked their WhatsApp account to Meta’s Accounts Center, their ad preferences from other Meta accounts will also be taken into consideration.
In addition to ads, WhatsApp will be introducing new features such as the ability to subscribe to channels for a monthly fee, allowing users to support their favorite creators and receive exclusive updates. Promoted Channels will also be introduced, giving channels the opportunity to pay for better visibility and discoverability within the app.
These changes to the WhatsApp app, including the introduction of ads and new channel features, will be rolled out gradually over the next several months. This is part of a series of updates that WhatsApp has been implementing, including the long-awaited WhatsApp iPad app that was released towards the end of May.
Overall, WhatsApp users can expect to see ads in the Updates tab soon, but rest assured that their privacy and messaging security will remain a top priority for Meta. Stay tuned for these new features and updates as they are gradually integrated into the WhatsApp platform.
