The Rise of Polar: Empowering One-Person Unicorns in the AI Era
Sam Altman and his tech CEO friends are placing bets on the year we will witness the birth of the first one-person billion-dollar company. This once unimaginable feat has become a possibility thanks to the emergence of AI-driven startups.
Birk Jernström, CEO of Polar, a monetization platform tailored for one-person unicorns, is at the forefront of this movement. Polar aims to differentiate itself by catering to the specific needs of developers. By serving as the ‘Merchant of Record,’ Polar takes care of billing and tax obligations, enabling businesses to sell their products and SaaS subscriptions globally from day one.
With a seamless implementation process requiring just a few lines of code, Polar has caught the attention of venture capital firm Accel, which led the startup’s $10 million seed funding round. Accel’s partner, Andrei Brasoveanu, highlighted the growing demand among AI-native early-stage businesses for streamlined growth strategies.
Jernström’s entrepreneurial journey began with his previous startup, Tictail, which was acquired by Shopify in 2018 for $17 million. Tictail’s mission was to simplify online selling for merchants, attracting over 100,000 users to its platform. After the acquisition, Jernström and his team joined Shopify’s Shop app project, contributing to its development and scalability.
Following a period of self-reflection in 2021, Jernström decided to embark on a new venture, giving birth to Polar. His transition from Shopify was supported by Shopify’s CEO Tobias Lütke and president Harley Finkelstein, who now serve as angel investors in Polar.
Polar’s customer-centric approach, coupled with its open-source model, has resonated with developers worldwide. Since its launch in September 2024, Polar has amassed a customer base of 18,000, primarily comprising developers monetizing software.
The startup’s cap table boasts notable entrepreneurs from the developer tools industry, such as Framer, Raycast, Nuxt, and Vercel, among others. These partnerships reflect Polar’s commitment to simplifying the process of building and scaling software businesses.
Jernström’s vision for Polar aligns with Shopify’s ethos of empowering entrepreneurship. He aims to enable developers to pursue their passions, independently ship software, and build successful businesses around their creations.
As the AI revolution continues to empower indie hackers and professional developers, Polar stands as a beacon of support for the next generation of one-person unicorns.
