Israeli Developer Sells Startup Base44 to Wix for $80 Million
There has been a lot of buzz in the startup world about the potential for AI to make individuals incredibly productive, leading to the emergence of “solo unicorns” – one-person companies valued at over $1 billion. While the concept of a true solo unicorn remains elusive, Israeli developer Maor Shlomo recently provided compelling evidence that it may not be entirely out of reach.
Shlomo made headlines when he sold his 6-month-old vibe-coding startup, Base44, to Wix for a whopping $80 million. The deal, which was confirmed to be in cash, was announced by Wix on Wednesday. While the sale price falls short of the billion-dollar mark, it is still a significant achievement for Shlomo and his team of eight employees, who will collectively receive $25 million as a retention bonus.
Base44’s rapid growth and impressive sale price have garnered attention within the vibe-coding community. In just six months, the company amassed 250,000 users, with 10,000 users signing up within the first three weeks of its launch. Despite its short lifespan, Base44 was profitable, generating $189,000 in profit in May alone.
Shlomo, a 31-year-old programmer, initially started Base44 as a side project with the goal of enabling people, regardless of their technical background, to build software without any coding knowledge. The platform allows users to enter text prompts, which are then used to create complete applications with features such as database management, storage, authentication, analytics, and integration. Base44 also supports email, texting, and maps, with plans to introduce more enterprise-grade security features in the future.
While Base44 is not the only vibe-coding product of its kind, its rapid ascent to success has been remarkable. Prior to founding Base44, Shlomo had already made a name for himself in the Israeli startup scene with his previous venture, Explorium, a data analytics company backed by Insight Partners.
Through strategic partnerships with major Israeli tech companies like eToro and Similarweb, Base44 quickly gained traction in the market. Shlomo’s decision to use Anthropic’s Claude LLM technology through AWS, rather than models by OpenAI, caught the attention of Amazon, which invited Base44 to demo at a Tel Aviv AWS event.
Reflecting on the acquisition by Wix, Shlomo expressed excitement about the potential for Base44 to scale even further with the resources now available. Wix, known for its no-code website building platform, saw the acquisition of Base44 as a strategic move to expand its offerings in the vibe-coding space.
As Shlomo embarks on this new chapter, the tech community eagerly anticipates what the future holds for Base44 under Wix’s ownership.
