Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo strongly criticized her Republican opponent, Gabe Evans, on Tuesday for not sufficiently denouncing the recent antisemitic and politically violent social media posts made by his former political director.

“He has failed to disavow the offensive posts or speak out against antisemitism,” Caraveo stated in a virtual press conference. “We must stand up against all forms of intolerance and hate whenever we encounter them.”

Evans, a state representative, did condemn the remarks made by his former political director, Jessica Spindle, in an email to JS on Tuesday.

“Gabe completely rejects the offensive content in those social media posts,” campaign spokesperson Alan Philp wrote. “That’s why he took immediate action upon learning about them.”

The posts by Spindle were detailed in a recent story by the Colorado Times Recorder, which included screenshots of Spindle’s antisemitic posts on social media platforms like Facebook, as well as a post where she wrote “please shoot her” in reference to Nancy Pelosi.

Spindle’s posts, dating back to 2019 through 2021, also included praise for a flag combining the U.S. flag, the “Don’t Tread on Me” flag, and the Confederate flag, as well as support for the QAnon conspiracy theory.

Evans’ campaign confirmed that Spindle was fired last week after her inappropriate social media comments came to light.

Illinois Congressman Brad Schneider, who is Jewish, joined Caraveo on the call and criticized Evans for not standing against hate and antisemitism.

The 8th Congressional District race in Colorado is expected to be closely contested, with the district covering northern Denver suburbs, Greeley, and a portion of Larimer County.
