A disturbing incident unfolded at Riis Park on Wednesday evening, as a masked man openly brandished a loaded pistol equipped with an illegal after-market switch for automatic gunfire. The individual, later identified as Eddie Arguelles, was seen riding around the park proudly displaying the weapon while making threatening gestures.

The situation took a drastic turn when Chicago police officers responded to reports of gunfire in the park. Witnesses had alerted 911 to a Hispanic man dressed in black and wearing a ski mask who had fired a shot on the football field. Upon arrival, officers spotted Arguelles fitting the description and standing next to a scooter.

As soon as he noticed the police presence, Arguelles attempted to flee on the scooter but lost control and fell on the field. Without hesitation, officers swiftly apprehended him before he could regain his footing. During the struggle, it was discovered that Arguelles was in possession of a firearm with an extended magazine concealed on his person.

Further investigation led to the recovery of a shell casing matching the caliber of the gun in question. Additionally, it was revealed that the firearm had a modified auto sear switch, allowing it to function as a machine gun. To add to the list of charges, the scooter Arguelles was riding had been reported stolen the previous summer.

In light of the serious offenses, Arguelles was charged with unlawful use of a machine gun, reckless discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and resisting arrest. Judge John Hock ordered him to be held in custody pending trial.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals engaging in reckless and criminal behavior. Thankfully, swift action by law enforcement prevented any further harm from occurring. Riis Park can once again be a safe and peaceful place for the community to enjoy, free from the threat of violence.
