In a tragic incident in Brazil’s Santa Catarina state, a hot-air balloon caught fire and crashed to the ground, claiming the lives of eight individuals, as reported by firefighters.

Footage captured by local news outlet G1 depicted the balloon engulfed in flames, descending rapidly towards the municipality of Praia Grande.

The Santa Catarina military fire brigade disclosed that out of the 21 individuals on board, including the pilot, thirteen survived and were transported to nearby hospitals.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. We must understand the circumstances surrounding it and provide the necessary support. The immediate focus is on aiding the affected families,” expressed Governor Jorginho Mello in a video message.

Governor Mello has directed authorities to swiftly respond to the municipality to assist in rescue operations and provide aid to those in need.

Praia Grande is a popular spot for hot-air ballooning, particularly during the June festivities that honor Catholic saints like St. John, in some regions of Brazil’s south.

Just last week, a similar incident occurred in Sao Paulo state, resulting in the death of a young woman and injuries to eleven others, according to G1.
