Snap Acquires Saturn, a Social Calendar App for Students

According to JS, Snap has recently acquired Saturn, a popular calendar app designed to help students manage their school schedules and share them with others. The financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed, but Snap has confirmed that Saturn will continue to operate as a standalone app.

The news of Snap’s acquisition of Saturn was first reported by Engadget. Almost the entire team behind Saturn will be joining Snap as part of the acquisition, with around 30 full-time employees coming on board.

While Snap has not revealed specific plans for integrating Saturn into its platform, a spokesperson for the company stated that they intend to leverage Saturn’s calendaring expertise in innovative ways within Snapchat.

Saturn, founded in 2018, offers a unique twist on traditional calendar apps by incorporating a social element. The app allows high school and college students to connect with their classmates, view their schedules, and coordinate activities without the need to share individual schedules through pictures.

Users of Saturn can easily share their schedules with friends to stay updated on each other’s activities and plan events accordingly. Beyond class schedules, users can also share information about practices, rehearsals, meetings, games, and more.

Snap highlighted that Saturn is widely used in schools, with 80% of high schools in the U.S. supporting the app. The company believes that Saturn’s success stems from its ability to transform scheduling into a more interactive and engaging experience. Snap aims to collaborate with Saturn to facilitate more real-world connections through their shared expertise.

Back in 2021, Forbes reported that Saturn had raised $44 million in a funding round led by prominent investors such as General Catalyst, Insight Partners, Coatue, Bezos Expeditions, Marc Benioff, Dara Khosrowshahi, as well as Ashton Kutcher and Guy Oseary’s Sound Ventures.
