Elle Pérez’s art is a testament to the power of love. Their photography captures moments of intimacy and connection, pulsating with life and emotion. The journey of Pérez’s practice began in the vibrant punk scene of the Bronx, where they first honed their craft in the early 2000s. This era of exploration and freedom is palpable in their current exhibition, “The World Is Always Again Beginning, History with the Present,” currently on display at the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

The exhibition is a chronological journey through Pérez’s work, from capturing the energy of punk shows in the Bronx to delving into the world of entertainment wrestling. Each image is a snapshot of a moment in time, a declaration of love and connection. The exhibition also includes a series of short films that offer a glimpse into Pérez’s personal history, from family gatherings to everyday moments of domestic life.

One of the standout series in the exhibition is “La Despedida,” which explores the parallel between Pérez’s grandfather’s garden in Puerto Rico and Claude Monet’s garden in France. The images blend the lush landscapes of both locations, creating a tapestry of colors and textures that speak to Pérez’s personal connection to their heritage.

Through their art, Pérez seeks to hold onto the fleeting moments of life, to immortalize the emotions and connections that define us. As Pérez states, “We will need pictures that express, through poetic declaration, what it felt like when we were alive.” Their work is a celebration of love, family, and the beauty of everyday moments.
