“Being on a platform like Netflix definitely helped shed light on our situation,” McLean says. “We were able to share our stories and struggles with a global audience, and I think that played a role in the Cowboys organization finally realizing the value of our work and dedication.”

The pay raise not only signifies a victory for the cheerleaders but also a step forward for women in traditionally underpaid industries. The DCC have long been symbols of American femininity and athleticism, but their financial struggles behind the scenes painted a different picture. With their successful negotiation, they have set a precedent for fair compensation in the world of professional cheerleading.

As the credits rolled on Season 2 of “America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders,” viewers were left with a sense of hope and empowerment. The cheerleaders’ story is a reminder that speaking up and advocating for oneself can lead to tangible change, even in the face of adversity. And as the world celebrates their victory, the cheerleaders can now continue to inspire others with their performances on the field, knowing that their hard work is finally being recognized and rewarded. In a recent interview, a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, McLean, discussed the significant pay increase that the cheerleaders received, shedding light on the reality behind the 400% figure that has been circulating in the media. McLean emphasized that the entire pay structure for the cheerleaders has been restructured, leading to varying rates of compensation for different aspects of their work, such as rehearsals, games, and special appearances.

Previously, McLean disclosed that in 2024, she was making $15 an hour and $500 per appearance, with compensation dependent on a cheerleader’s experience. However, following the increase, veteran cheerleaders are now making upwards of $75 an hour, with some earning even more for certain events. McLean clarified that the 400% increase does not apply uniformly across all aspects of their pay but has been significant in certain areas.

Reflecting on the recent season of “America’s Sweethearts,” which aired on Netflix, McLean shared her thoughts on having her journey captured for a wider audience. She expressed gratitude for the positive messages she had received but also acknowledged the pressure of having more eyes on her now. Despite the overwhelming response, McLean’s focus remains on navigating this new chapter with grace and gratitude.

When asked about her initial hesitancy to be featured on the docuseries and her eventual decision to participate in Season 2, McLean explained that she wanted her story to be portrayed authentically and in its entirety. After witnessing the production team’s dedication to showcasing the cheerleaders’ experiences accurately, she felt comfortable sharing her journey with the world.

Regarding the pivotal conversations about pay and negotiations that were documented in the latest season, McLean highlighted the importance of continuing the dialogue around fair compensation for cheerleaders. She expressed pride in the progress that has been made and the legacy that she and her fellow veterans have left behind through their advocacy for better pay.

Ultimately, McLean and the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders decided to allow the cameras into their private discussions about negotiations to shed light on their struggle for fair compensation. They felt compelled to share their story with the world and show that they value themselves and their work, despite the challenges they faced in advocating for their worth. The docuseries served as a platform to amplify their voices and bring attention to the ongoing fight for equitable pay in the cheerleading industry. As we reflect on our journey as women in the workplace, we wanted to showcase our value and our ability to stand up for ourselves. It is important for women to recognize their worth and not be afraid to use their voices. My mother always instilled in me the importance of speaking up and asking questions, even if the answer may be no. It is okay to have tough conversations and advocate for oneself, as the outcome may be worth it in the end.

I urge other women to use their voices and not be afraid to challenge the status quo. It can be daunting to speak up, but it is necessary for progress. In our case, standing up for what we believed in was worth the risk. We were prepared to walk out if necessary, to stand our ground and fight for what we deserved.

It was a difficult decision, especially knowing it was my last season. I didn’t want to disappoint my family who had come to support me. However, I knew that this was bigger than just me. It was about standing up for women who came before me and those who will come after me. Fortunately, a solution was reached without having to resort to drastic measures.

Being named the point of the triangle this season was a surreal moment for me. I never thought I would be in such a prominent position, not because of my identity as a woman of color, but because of my height. The comments about my height being too tall were hurtful, but I have learned to accept and embrace it. Being entrusted with leading the team was a tremendous honor, and I am grateful for the trust that was placed in me.

In conclusion, it is essential for women to stand up for themselves and not be afraid to use their voices in the workplace. By advocating for our worth, we not only empower ourselves but also inspire others to do the same. It is through unity and resilience that we can create positive change in the professional dance world and beyond.
