UK-based Hilton Food Group to Build First North American Facility in Canada

UK-based Hilton Food Group is set to expand its operations into North America with the construction of its first food processing and distribution facility in Canada. The 230,000-square-foot plant, located in Brantford, Ontario, will focus on supplying a variety of protein products including beef, pork, lamb, and seafood to distribution centres in Mississauga, Cornwall, and Moncton.

Matt Lee, CEO of Hilton Foods’ regional operations, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This is the beginning of a long-term commitment to Ontario’s food supply chain, to the people of this region, and to the future of high-quality Canadian food products, right here in Brantford, Ontario.”

The London-listed company announced its plans for the Canadian facility in 2023 following a strategic partnership with Walmart. The facility is expected to commence production next year and is projected to create 150 new jobs in the region.

Hilton Food Group will invest C$192 million ($140 million) into the facility, with the Ontario government contributing C$1.5 million through its Southwestern Ontario Development Fund to support the expansion.

In its 2024 financial report, Hilton Food Group reported a revenue of £3.98 billion ($5.41 billion), with a slight increase of 1.9% on a constant-currency basis. The company generated £1.47 billion of its revenue from the UK and Ireland.

Operating profit for the 52-week period ending 29 December grew to £98.8 million, up from £86.1 million in the previous year. Profit for the period also saw an increase to £41.6 million, surpassing the £38 million recorded a year earlier.

Hilton Food Group has already made strides in the US market with its seafood products following the acquisition of Dutch salmon processor Foppen in 2021. Foppen, known as the Dutch Seafood Company, specializes in value-added branded and own-label smoked salmon products for customers in the US.

While Hilton Food Group supplies the US market with seafood, the company does not currently have a manufacturing presence in the US.
