Meta Poaches Three OpenAI Researchers Despite Rival’s Mockery

In a competitive battle for top AI talent, Meta has recently made headlines by successfully recruiting three researchers from OpenAI. This move comes despite public mockery from rival Sam Altman towards Mark Zuckerberg’s aggressive hiring tactics.

The three researchers, Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai, who were instrumental in establishing OpenAI’s Zurich office, have now joined Meta’s superintelligence team. This development, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, showcases the effectiveness of Zuckerberg’s recruitment strategies.

Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, disclosed in a podcast with his brother Jack that Zuckerberg has been offering lucrative compensation packages exceeding $100 million to attract top talent from OpenAI. The Journal further revealed that Zuckerberg personally communicates with hundreds of leading AI researchers via WhatsApp, organizing recruitment targets through a dedicated chat group named “Recruiting Party 🎉” before hosting exclusive dinners at his residences in Palo Alto and Lake Tahoe.

While Zuckerberg’s tactics have yielded some successes, such as securing Scale AI’s CEO Alexandr Wang with a $14 billion investment, he has faced challenges in recruiting high-profile individuals like OpenAI co-founders Ilya Sutskever and John Schulman, who have chosen to pursue other ventures. Altman expressed satisfaction that OpenAI’s key members have not been swayed by Zuckerberg’s enticing offers.
