Cairo Photo Week 2025: A Celebration of Visual Storytelling

Cairo Photo Week 2025 took place over the course of ten days in May, captivating the streets of Cairo with a vibrant display of creative energy. This year’s theme, “Finding The View,” set the tone for the festival, which showcased a diverse range of photographic works and visual storytelling. Organized by Photopia, a leading independent platform under the direction of Marwa Abu Leila, Cairo Photo Week 2025 presented its most expansive and ambitious edition to date, solidifying its position as a cornerstone in the visual culture calendar of the region.

The festival featured a staggering array of programming, including 25 exhibitions showcasing the works of 120 artists, over 100 talks and panels, 16 workshops, 6 exhibition tours and photowalks, 53 portfolio reviews, and a host of networking events. With more than 600 hours of programming, Cairo Photo Week 2025 attracted over 25,000 attendees, including 2,000 students and early-career creatives, highlighting the growing and vibrant creative community in Egypt.

What sets Cairo Photo Week apart is not just its scale, but its essence. The festival exuded a sense of connection and momentum, transforming the city into a hub of creativity and dialogue. Established photographers stood alongside emerging talents, creating a dynamic tapestry of visual culture that reflected the region’s diversity. Local artists captured the nuances of daily life in Cairo with intimacy and urgency, while international contributors added a global perspective to the conversation.

As a participant in the festival, I had the privilege of engaging with artists and attendees through discussions, mentorship sessions, and portfolio reviews. The hunger for dialogue, mentorship, and community was palpable throughout the event, underscoring Cairo Photo Week’s role as a catalyst for creativity and collaboration. The festival’s diverse venues, spanning 14 locations across two districts, provided a platform for artists to showcase their work and connect with a broader audience.

Egypt’s creative scene is flourishing, thanks in part to the efforts of Photopia and the collective contributions of artists, educators, and institutions. Cairo Photo Week is not just a reflection of the current state of photography in the region; it is actively shaping the future of visual storytelling. By fostering a space where ideas can thrive and visions can evolve, Cairo Photo Week is paving the way for a dynamic and inclusive creative community in Egypt and beyond.
