Renowned musician and composer Lalo Schifrin, known for his iconic theme tune for the TV series Mission: Impossible, has passed away, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of music. The news of his death devastated many, including Hollywood star Tom Cruise, who ensured that Schifrin’s contributions to the Mission: Impossible franchise will forever be remembered.

Schifrin, an Argentine composer, won four Grammys and received six Oscar nominations throughout his illustrious career. His work on films such as Cool Hand Luke, The Fox, Voyage of the Damned, The Amityville Horror, and The Sting II showcased his immense talent and creativity. Additionally, he composed the grand finale musical performance for the 1990 soccer World Cup in Italy, featuring the Three Tenors – Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, and José Carreras.

Aside from his film and TV contributions, Schifrin was a talented jazz pianist and classical conductor who collaborated with musical legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, and Sarah Vaughan. However, it was his catchy and memorable theme for Mission: Impossible that truly solidified his place in music history. The theme, written in a unique 5/4 time signature, became synonymous with the popular TV show and later the movie franchise starring Tom Cruise.

The success of the Mission: Impossible theme, with its distinctive “Dum-dum DUM DUM dum-dum DUM DUM” motif, led to critical acclaim and commercial success. It even reached No. 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1968. Schifrin’s creative process behind the theme highlighted his innovative approach to composition, as he crafted a signature tune that captivated audiences worldwide.

In addition to his musical achievements, Schifrin’s legacy includes a hidden message within the Mission: Impossible theme. The Morse Code for “M” and “I” – representing “Mission Impossible” – is cleverly embedded in the two long and two short notes of the theme, a fact that even the movie’s stars, Simon Pegg and Rebecca Ferguson, were unaware of until a radio host shared the revelation.

Schifrin’s impact on the music industry and popular culture is undeniable, with his work on Mission: Impossible earning him Grammy awards and a place in the Grammy Hall of Fame. His talent and creativity will continue to inspire generations of musicians and fans alike. He is survived by his sons, Ryan and William, daughter, Frances, and wife, Donna, leaving behind a musical legacy that will endure for years to come.
