A gunman who caused chaos at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx by opening fire in the emergency room has been sentenced to 12 years in prison. Keber Martinez, 25, pleaded guilty to first-degree assault for the January 2022 shooting that left one man injured and put patients and staff in danger.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark highlighted the seriousness of Martinez’s actions, noting that he showed complete disregard for the safety of those at the hospital. Surveillance footage captured Martinez wearing a dark hoodie as he pulled out a gun and shot at another man multiple times. The victim, a 35-year-old man, was hit in the left arm during the attack.

The chaotic scene forced others in the waiting area to take cover under chairs and furniture until Martinez fled the scene. The hospital had to temporarily close following the shooting, and the injured man required immediate medical attention in the operating room.

After a 12-hour manhunt, Martinez was apprehended in Harlem thanks to a tip from his sister, who reported that he was acting erratically, hearing voices, and had a gun. It is believed that Martinez and the victim were acquainted with each other.

In addition to his 12-year prison sentence, Martinez will also be under five years of post-release supervision. The incident at Jacobi Medical Center serves as a reminder of the potential dangers that can arise in healthcare settings and the importance of maintaining safety protocols to protect both patients and staff.
