The Senate Republicans find themselves in a quagmire as the much-touted Trump tax cuts bill struggles to gain traction on the Senate floor. With aspirations for a 4 PM (ET) vote to kick off discussions on the bill’s final passage, the party is facing unexpected hurdles.

Complicating matters, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) has boldly declared that unless significant amendments are made to the Medicaid cut provisions, he will vote against both the motion to proceed and the bill itself. A clear line in the sand has been drawn.

Here’s a snapshot of Tillis’s stance:

Tillis’s observations about the Senate’s proposed Medicaid cuts are spot-on; they are indeed more severe than those in the House version, which itself is hardly a beacon of hope.

From the Democrats’ perspective, the stakes are high: if Republican leadership remains obstinate regarding the legislation’s Medicaid language, only two additional dissenting votes in the Senate would be required to thwart the bill’s passage, especially since Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has already declared his opposition.

A faction of Republican Senators remains indecisive about their final votes, leaving the outcome of this legislative battle far from certain.

Should Senate Republicans hold firm on their Medicaid cuts, a contingent of moderate House Republicans stands ready to oppose the bill’s final passage, which adds another layer of uncertainty to the proceedings.

In essence, the entire situation feels precarious—because it is.

While Republicans may barely manage to push this legislation through Congress, the political ramifications of endorsing such an unpopular bill could jeopardize many of their future electoral prospects.

For Democrats and the vast majority of Americans who hope for the bill’s failure, the finish line is tantalizingly close.

Senator Tillis could potentially shift his vote to ‘yes’ if significant changes to Medicaid cuts are made, but with no indications of such changes on the horizon, it appears that Trump’s grand ambition for tax reform may be destined for the annals of political history as nothing more than a failed initiative.
