The recent police friendly fire shooting at a Brooklyn subway station has sparked controversy and debate. The incident left a police officer and two bystanders injured, prompting NYPD brass to defend the actions of the officers involved.

According to police reports, the officers repeatedly warned the suspect, Derrell Mickles, to drop his knife a total of 38 times and even attempted to tase him twice before resorting to gunfire. NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell emphasized that the officers were faced with a fast-paced and stressful situation, and they did their best to protect themselves and others present at the subway station.

Chell refuted claims that the shooting occurred because Mickles failed to pay a $2.90 fare, calling such narratives irresponsible and incorrect. He highlighted that bodycam footage from the officers depicted a tense 2-minute-26-second confrontation with the knife-wielding suspect.

The footage, which advocacy groups like the New York Civil Liberties Union have demanded, will be released by the NYPD in the coming days. Chell revealed that Mickles had two encounters with the officers within a span of 10 minutes. The suspect initially jumped a turnstile in front of the officers but left voluntarily when asked to do so.

However, Mickles returned to the station with a knife in hand, prompting the officers to follow him to the subway platform. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, Mickles refused, and the officers discharged their Tasers, which proved ineffective. Mickles then charged at the officers with the knife, leading to the officers firing their weapons and injuring him, as well as bystander Gregory Delpeche and Officer Edmonds Mays.

Mickles now faces multiple charges, including attempted assault and possession of a weapon. The stolen knife was later recovered from the crime scene, and a suspect who was briefly taken into custody in connection with the weapon has since been released.

The NYPD is standing by the actions of the officers involved in the shooting, describing the incident as tragic but defending the officers’ response as necessary given the circumstances. As the investigation continues, more details are expected to emerge, shedding light on the events that transpired at the Brooklyn subway station.
