US Attorney Refuses to Drop Case Against Mayor Eric Adams

US Attorney Danielle Sassoon recently made headlines when she released a letter to AG Pam Bondi, explaining her refusal to carry out Bondi’s order to drop the case against Mayor Eric Adams. In the letter, Sassoon expressed her concerns about the ethical implications of dismissing the case without prejudice and the potential threat it posed to future prosecution.

Sassoon’s letter highlighted the rushed and superficial process by which the decision to drop the charges was reached, suggesting collaboration between Adams’s counsel and the Department of Justice without her direct input. She emphasized her commitment to zealously defend the interests of the United States and expressed her willingness to offer her resignation if her concerns were not addressed.

Despite attempts by Trump to spin the situation as a firing, Sassoon’s decision to resign was a result of the administration’s questionable actions in collaborating with Adams’s lawyer on a deal to drop the charges. Many observers have raised concerns about possible ulterior motives behind the decision, such as leveraging the dropped charges for concessions on immigration raids in the city.

The incident has raised alarm bells about the weaponization and politicization of the Department of Justice under Trump’s administration. The extreme behavior exhibited in this case has prompted internal resignations and departures, signaling a growing crisis within the department.
