The streets of Humboldt Park in Chicago were the setting for a bizarre and slow-speed police pursuit that went viral this week. The video footage captured a minivan creeping along at a mere 2 mph, weaving through construction cones and even driving on the sidewalk, while a fleet of Chicago police cars attempted to corral the driver.

The incident began early Wednesday morning when Chicago police officers came across a peculiar sight on West Chicago Avenue. They discovered 33-year-old Sonny Costello of Burbank in a Town & Country minivan, allegedly smoking crack cocaine from a glass pipe. When the officers approached Costello and asked him to step out of the vehicle, he decided to make a leisurely getaway by slowly driving away, prompting the police to initiate a low-speed chase.

The pursuit, more akin to a parade than a high-speed chase, saw Costello meandering through the streets of Humboldt Park, disregarding traffic signs and driving the wrong way. Eventually, he bumped into a squad car, causing his van to emit smoke and come to a halt on West Chicago Avenue. Officers quickly surrounded the van, with one drawing their gun and another attempting to break the passenger window with a baton before Costello was apprehended.

Costello now faces a slew of charges, including aggravated DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, and criminal damage to government property. He also received citations for various traffic violations during his slow-speed escapade. Despite the charges, Judge John Hock released Costello to await trial.

This strange and comical incident captured on video highlights the unpredictable nature of police work and the lengths officers go to ensure public safety. The viral footage of the slow-speed pursuit in Chicago’s Humboldt Park serves as a reminder of the unusual situations law enforcement officers encounter on a daily basis.
